Media Apprises CYBRIDGE Online Examination System

Bold Step into the Future

The University of Pune (UoP) has taken a bold step into the future. After conducting a pilot project last year in which exams for ‘Fundamentals of Computer Programming Languages’ were held successfully in a CD-based format, UoP will conduct an online exam for one subject for first year engineering (FE) students on January 6, 2010.

20,000 students, 57 engineering colleges

The University of Pune has successfully implemented the online exams for around 20,000 students of 57 engineering colleges affiliated to the university. This is the first time that the university conducted online exams for any of its stream.

It was the need of the hour to conduct the exams in free and fair manner. Especially, considering the huge burden on the examination department, a simple, feasible and full-proof system was needed and online exams had come forward as an option. Academic council of the UoP accepted the idea and it was decided to conduct the practical exams of "Fundamentals of Programming languages" of first year computer engineering stream online as a pilot project.

Online exams: University of Pune shows the way

"This will help in reducing time required for assessment work, thereby assisting the university authorities to declare results well within the time in spite of increase in number of students and colleges. There is no burden on the students to apply any more for photocopies and revaluation

Transparent, credible and independent assessment system

"Going for such technology-based option is imperative if universities are to stand up to the competition vis-a-vis foreign varsities that are to soon enter into Indian higher education sector and the innovative evaluation and assessment mechanisms and tools they are expected to bring.

The growth in the number of engineering colleges under the UoP, from a little over 30 three years ago to 70, and the resultant growth in volumes for paper evaluation and assessment, besides lack of adequate  qualified manpower for such processes, prompted the UoP engineering faculty to explore online examination. "The idea was also to have transparent, credible and independent assessment system,"
